Free film screenings, creepy craft workshops and ghoulish ghost tours are arriving in the city centre from this weekend as Chester prepares for a spooktacular week of Halloween celebrations covering October Half Term.
The fun begins with Bedknobs and Broomsticks being shown for free at the Grosvenor Museum at 2:00pm this Sunday (25 October). Other family-friendly movies including Monsters Inc. (27 October) Casper (29 October),Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (30 October) and The Nightmare Before Christmas (31 October) will be shown throughout the half term week.
Children will be able to create their own spell books and pumpkins with a free Halloween craft workshop at Cruise nightclub on Friday 30 October. The following day, a creepy crawly roadshow will arrive featuring snakes, tarantulas and scorpions, with free prize giveaways. Face painting will also take place at both events.
“We’re all set for a frighteningly good week of Halloween fun,” said Emily Ghazarian, Events Manager at CH1ChesterBID Company, which has coordinated all of the free Hallowee’k activities.
“We want to see as many people as possible enjoying Halloween in the city centre so we’re encouraging children and families to come in fancy dress to help us create a fang-tastic atmosphere right across the city centre!There’s already been lots of interest in all of the activities so we hope everyone that come to the city centre has a scream this Halloween.”
A series of free citywide ghost tours during the half term week sold out within hours of being made available on the CH1ChesterBID website. People are being advised to book places at all the remaining events early to avoid disappointment although some events require no booking and you can just turn up.
Local businesses are also getting into the Halloween spirit, with Luke’s Eating House on St John Street offering free meals for children (one per full paying adult) and Blackhouse Grill on Pepper Street offering free meals for children in fancy dress (one per full paying adult) from 24 October until 1 November.
Meanwhile, John Jules Photography on Bridge Street is running a ‘freaky face’ competition where anyone arriving in Chester in fancy dress from 24 October until 31 October can have his or her photo taken and be entered into a free prize draw to win a family photo shoot worth £195.
