International visitors receive a friendly welcome in Chester

It’s never been easier for international tourists to visit Chester thanks to a new project to boost the city’s appeal with overseas visitors.

The International Welcome project, led by Marketing Cheshire, has produced a visitor guide in seven different languages – Mandarin, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, German, French and Hindi – which is now available at the Visitor Information Centre and to download online at www.visitchester.com. The Visit Chester website has also been translated into nine different languages.

CH1ChesterBID – the city’s Business Improvement District – has also supported the introduction of the new guides to complement its World-Class Welcome initiative, which includes Welcome Ambassadors dressed in three-piece suits, overcoats and bowler hats. The multi-lingual team meet and greet Chester visitors, guide them around the city and centre and point out local attractions to help people make the most of their trip to the city.

The project also supports Marketing Cheshire’s work with Visit England’s Northern Tourism Growth Fund, which aims to promote destinations in the North of England internationally.
Katrina Michel, Chief Executive of Marketing Cheshire, said: “International tourism is expected to grow in Chester over the next five years, and so it is even more important that the city is positioned as an attractive and friendly place for overseas visitors.

“Our International Welcome project has already led to Chester’s inclusion in Visit Britain’s GREAT China Welcome charter, and is a big step in the right direction in ensuring that we make Chester as visitor friendly and accessible as possible.”

Julie Charlton, Marketing Manager at CH1ChesterBID, added: “We want our international visitors to see everything Chester has to offer and the introduction of these new welcome guides in addition to our Welcome Ambassadors will really help us achieve that. We’re already welcoming visitors from all over the world in the city centre and providing them with an unforgettable experience is the best way to ensure they want to return again in the future and tell others what a fantastic city this is to visit.”
