Cleaning up Chester underpass

Improvement works are due to begin from Monday 19 October in the Bars subway at City Road, Chester, and should take approximately ten days to complete.

Following this, work will start on the Fountains subway at Upper Northgate Street, Chester on October 29 and is due to be completed by 13 November. Both subways will remain open throughout the work.

Both schemes, which are a partnership project between Cheshire West and Chester Council and CH1ChesterBID, will bring important improvement works to two of the major gateways into the city centre.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities, Councillor Mark Henesy said: “The subway works will include a deep clean of the floors, walls and ceilings, repairs and improvements to lighting and will be followed by a repaint and replacement of directional signage.

“Work will be carried out between 7am and 4pm; although the subways will remain open, there will be barriers in place so that pedestrians can steer clear of any wet paint”.

CH1BID City Centre Manager Peter Lewis said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Council on this project. Both subways are important pedestrian routes into the city and the work should be completed in time for use by our Christmas visitors.

“CH1ChesterBID will be providing new city centre maps in the subways as well as notice boards, which will promote events and signpost people to the many attractions within the city centre”.
